junior architecture project | the kitchen
This project was to design a new space for The Kitchen restaurant in Boulder, Colorado. There were going to be moving from their location on Pearl Street to a new location on Pearl further West. The new site had a brick structure (right structure in the photo above) that is a historic building that could not be torn down. It could be manipulated so the restaurant could use the space. The new space also had to have a space where food could be grown for use on the menu. I decided to create a new contemporary structure that would interact with the historical building really showcasing both the new building as well as the old brick structure. The brick building would become the new bar / happy-hour space with in the restaurant layout. I also decided to incorporate a large steel structure that pierced through the restaurant that would house the kitchen itself as well as be the main source of light within the building. I wanted to have a light cube that could be seen from any seat within the building as well as be seen from Pearl street itself. This would act as an attracting feature much like the light from on top of the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas. The final space in the restaurant would be a roof-top patio that has a more tapas and drinks feel than the rest of the building. The open space in front of the brick structure would be the gardens that patrons would walk past and through to get to the entrance.
